Position Description: Curatorial, Inc. needs an intern to play a crucial role in the digitizing, cataloguing and conservation of a major photographic collection made by Britain's preeminent Modernist photographer active from 1907 to 1945.

E. O. Hoppé (1878-1972) was “the most famous photographer in the world in the 1920s” whose photographic archives were recently “excavated” from one of England’s oldest picture libraries where the works were interred in 1954. The collection contains the photographer's vintage negatives and various published books and articles both by and about Hoppé. His portrait subjects include the most famous literary figures of the Edwardian and Modern era both in Britain, Europe and the United States. Hoppé’s topographic views of London and Great Britain is one of the treasures of the collection and the subject of this internship. More information on the photographer can be found here: www.eohoppe.com

Managed by Curatorial, Inc., the Hoppé archive is in the process of conserving and digitizing the photographer’s negatives of the UK and the USA, Europe, India, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, and Central Africa among other countries for a retrospective book and exhibition. The images will also be used to create a major online archive of these extraordinary images from the first half of the twentieth century.

Interns will be trained by Curatorial staff to work on one or several of the following tasks:

  • organize and perform conservation work on original Hoppé negatives
  • digital capture and correction of images
  • practice Photoshop techniques to create high resolution picture files for book and web publishing
  • research on the already identified picture subjects to generate metadata descriptions of the picture content
  • research museum contacts in CRM database

The internship will be structured as much as possible to suit the interests of each intern.
